14 steps to a healthy summer diet!

14 steps to a healthy summer diet!

Summers are back and with every year that passes, this season is getting hotter and hotter. Global Warming and El Niño weather phenomenon have contributed a lot in raising the heat of this season every year. Hence, it is but natural to expect more heat this time than previous years.
Principally, we expose our bodies more to sun, especially in summer season. This results in more sweat and hence more dehydration. And, this may lead to lack of resistance and energy.

It is of great importance that we maintain our body's water content to a balanced level. Additionally, we also need to take care of our skin, eyes and various other aspects.

There are various tips and easy to do things and habits, which you can adopt to take care of your health and beat the heat. I have provided some quick tips to make it up for the heat. These are really very simple, don't need too much investment and can even add up to your style statement this summer.

Here are some other useful lifestyle tips you can follow to beat the summer heat.

1. Water is the best option to quench thirst.
It is a key ingredient in keeping the body cool. With high humidity levels, sweat will not evaporate quickly. This prevents the body from releasing heat in an efficient manner. This is why it is necessary to hydrate and drink water, even when you are not thirsty. Increase water intake regardless of your activity levels.

2. Avoid caffeinated or carbonated beverages, alcoholic beverages, and those high in sugar.
All these drinks contain preservatives, colours and sugars. They are acidic in nature and act as diuretics. They cause loss of fluids through urine.
Many soft drinks contain diluted phosphoric acid, which damages the inner lining of the digestive tract and, therefore, affects its functions.
An excessive intake of soft drinks increases phosphorous levels in the blood. This separates calcium from the bones and moves it into the blood.
This calcium displacement from the bones makes them porous and brittle. It also causes plaque on the teeth, kidney stones, arthritis and bone spur.
Soft drinks also reduce mineral levels in the body to such an extent that enzymes are unable to function well, resulting in indigestion.

3. Do not drink very chilled liquids.
They do not really help cool you down in summers, though they make you cool for some time. Drinking really cold liquids when feeling hot may lead to a slight constriction of the blood vessels in the skin and decrease heat loss, which is not advisable when trying to cool down.

4. Limit all strenuous activity.

5. Eat light, nutritious and non-fatty meals.

6. Reduce intake of heaty vegetables and fruits, like spinach, radish, hot peppers, onions, garlic, beetroot, pineapple, grapefruit and ripe mangoes (if you cannot resist mangoes, soak them overnight in water).

7. Minimise the intake of dried fruits. Increase the intake of fresh fruit.

8. Use sabza (tulsi seeds) in your drinks -- this has very cooling effect on the body.

9. Include lots of fruits and vegetables in the form of salads and fresh juices, preferably without sugar, in your diet.

10. Drink lemon juice, coconut water and thin buttermilk, to replenish the fluids that are lost in sweat.

11. Avoid sugary foods, especially honey and molasses, and stick to natural sugars available from fruits and veggies.

12. Minimise the intake of hot, spicy foods and extremely salty foods. The body retains salt in the organic form found in fruits and veggies; the inorganic salt, meanwhile, is digested and needs to be thrown out of the body. And this is why you need to drink water!

13. Cut the intake of fried foods, like vadas, samosas, chips, bhajias, farsans, etc. Fat has a thermal effect.

14. Maintain good hygiene levels.

Since the sultry heat of summer increases with each degree rise in the mercury, by rooting ourselves to nature's provision of healthful food choices we can experience the bloom of our health and vitality.

Tapping the Power of Thoughts - A Reality?

Tapping the Power of Thoughts - A Reality?

The ability to heal, love and create is in our minds!
~ Harsh Kabra

If scientists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences are to be referred to, the human race is going to have direct contact with aliens in the next 10-15 years, not through radio waves, but through the power of thoughts.

We all feel that thoughts are nothing, but just normal and regular creations of a functioning brain, like the water that flows from an open tap. Nevertheless, while going through a simplistic and abstract view of what philosophy professor W D Hart called "Ahe Artifacts of an Analysis of a Mind", we fail to appreciate the real energy that brainwaves personify.
Scientists at University of Zaragoza, Spain, have unveiled a wheelchair that can be steered by the power of thoughts, the user only has to concentrate on the part of the display corresponding to where he or she wants to go, and electrodes in a skullcap can detect the user’s brain activity to work out the destination.
As a matter of fact, the power of thoughts is no more limited to the realms of the philosophy. An Austrian health care company has actually invented a thought-powered prosthetic arm, which works based on the impulses from the wearer's brain.

One of the world’s biggest toy manufacturing companies, has already launched an inventive game where players wearing a brain-scanning headset can guide a ball through an obstacle course using the power of thoughts.

Researchers from the University of Southampton also have used brain-computer interfacing to capture brain signals and translate them into commands that enable the humans to control devices and virtual reality environments just by thinking about various actions.

These developments have added a strong scientific dimension to Bhagavad-Gita’s assertion:

"You are what you think; hence thought is action, being and becoming; what one thinks, one becomes."

It was the power of thought that Krishna invoked in Arjuna that helped the latter overcome his grief.

A study by researchers at University College, London, affirms that brainwaves have a direct influence on a person’s behaviour. They’ve found, for instance, that people can be made to move in slow motion by boosting a brainwave of a certain frequency and location. Be it our health, lifestyle, occupation or relationships, we are what we choose to become.
According to Swami Chinmayananda:

"Activities gain potency from the power of thought that feeds them."

As James Allen writes in As a Man Thinketh, human mind is the master weaver, both of the inner garment of character and the outer garment of circumstance.

If our thinking is negative, we can drown in a sea of negativity; if it’s positive, we can float on the ocean of life.
It is obviously not about living in an illusion that just by thinking positive, we can automatically take care of all obstacles in our way. On the contrary, it is more about approaching life with a positive mind-set so as to let the mind think better.
Positive thinking alone may not be a nostrum for all the problems and illnesses, as the bustling self-help industry would have us believe, but it surely can guide us in the way to positive beliefs and the emotions that come out of that belief, which can help us in thinking clearly and in getting closer to happiness. Thoughts help us to heal, harm, create, destroy, love and hate. It is up to us to unleash and exploit that power. If it can help us communicate with aliens, why can’t it be used to communicate with our own selves and guide to glory the actions that define us?

Quintessential Video (courtesy Taj Hotels)

Quintessential Video (courtesy Taj Hotels)

I was just randomly browsing through my television screen, bored of finding nothing interesting to watch. I usually love to see travel and living channel, because of my love and fantasy to visit various places and know the culture, religion, and various other traditions of things happening around the world. But, to my dismay, the channel is not up at my locality at the moment.

While flipping through the screens, with no amazing thought going on in my mind, a very soothing music caught my attention. I browsed back through my television screen to see what was the source of that music, and I landed on this amazingly beautiful, sensuous and attractive video for Taj Hotels. Just watching the video for five minutes,  gave me so much peace. I know it is made for commercial purpose, but I surprisingly found it good and amazing enough to work as a meditation video for me. Just check it out yourself, I may write a longer post about it soon... :). Till then enjoy the video:
